The second quarter financial reports for the biotech industry have shown impressive results. Preliminary statistics indicate that more than 30 companies achieved over 30% profit growth year-on-year. Among them, 11 companies, including GenMont (景岳), Savior Lifetec (松瑞藥), Formosa Laboratories (台耀), PharmaEngine (智擎), and Ever Supreme Bio Technology (長聖), saw their profits more than double compared to the same period last year. Additionally, six companies, including Medigen Biotech (基亞), Jia Jie Biomedical (加捷), PharmaEssentia (藥華藥), Lumosa Therapeutics (順藥), Medigen Vaccine Biologics (高端), and Ever Fortune AI (長佳智能), reported a turnaround from losses to profitability. The growth momentum is expected to continue into the second half of the year.
Among the biotech companies with standout year-on-year profit growth in Q2, the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and contact lens segments performed particularly well. The diagnostics and pharmaceutical sectors also saw strong results. Notably, seven companies—Synmax Genomics (訊聯基因), Bora Pharmaceuticals (保瑞), YungShin Global Holding Corporation (永信控), Taiwan Liposome Company (科妍), PharmaEssentia (藥華藥), Jia Jie Biomedical (加捷), and TaiGen Biotechnology (德英)—achieved record-high quarterly profits.
In the API sector, ScinoPharm Taiwan (神隆) benefited from significant growth in its contract manufacturing and injectable product lines. Its first-half profit increased by 1.17 times year-on-year, with an EPS of 0.27 NT dollars. The company expects continued growth in the second half of the year, with the potential for double-digit annual growth. ScinoPharm has plans to launch four self-developed injectable products over the next two years.
Formosa Laboratories (台耀) saw a 240.5% increase in after-tax net profit in Q2, driven by core business growth and positive investment returns, with an EPS of 2.36 NT dollars, the highest in six quarters. The company has benefited from strong demand for its key product, cholesterol phosphate, and has increased production capacity by 25% since the end of last year, with current orders fully booked. Additionally, the company has CDMO customers from Europe, the U.S., and Greater China for its injectable products, with ADC drugs accounting for 20-30% of CDMO revenue. In response to growing orders, Formosa Laboratories has expanded its capacity fivefold, with completion expected in Q3.
In the pharmaceutical sector, Bora Pharmaceuticals (保瑞) remained the profit leader. YungShin Global Holding Corporation (永信控) saw a boost in performance in the U.S. and Japan markets, along with contributions from its subsidiary Yung Shin Pharmaceutical Industries Co., Ltd. (永日). The company’s EPS reached 2.26 NT dollars in the first half of the year, surpassing 70% of its full-year profit from last year. Analysts expect YungShin to achieve record profits since the establishment of its holding company, driven by increased margins in the U.S. market due to expanded distribution channels and rising drug prices in Japan, where the government is concerned about potential shortages of some antibiotics and has negotiated with key suppliers to secure supply and significantly raise prices.
Among the companies that turned profitable, PharmaEssentia (藥華藥) has entered a new era of profitability. With the expansion of its global operations, the company is expected to see rapid profit growth. Furthermore, its new drug Ropeg, which treats polycythemia vera, may receive additional indications as early as the end of next year, providing further operational momentum.
Medigen Vaccine Biologics (高端) reported a turnaround in Q2, with an EPS of 0.04 NT dollars, thanks to increased shipments of its enterovirus vaccine. As public awareness of the vaccine increases, the company aims to double its market penetration within three years. Analysts are optimistic that the company could secure regulatory approval in Vietnam by the end of this year or early next year, which would significantly boost its performance.
