Quanta's AI advancements continue with $250 billion investment in R&DMay 23, 2024

Quanta Computer Inc. is intensifying its efforts in AI, smart automotive technology, smart healthcare, and smart manufacturing. Following a record R&D expenditure that accounted for 2% of the company's operating revenue last year, totaling NT$23.3 billion, Quanta is set to surpass NT$25 billion in R&D spending this year, reaching new heights.

Quanta highlights that innovation and breakthroughs in AI development often require early investment and continuous exploration. To this end, the company is dedicating substantial resources to uncovering untapped potential opportunities. Alongside employee incentives, this substantial investment is expected to drive R&D expenditure to new levels this year.

Last year, Quanta's R&D spending was approximately NT$23.3 billion, an increase of NT$2 billion from NT$21.3 billion in 2022, reflecting a 9% year-on-year growth. In 2023 and 2022, the R&D expenditure as a percentage of operating revenue was 2.15% and 1.67%, respectively.

Quanta explains that innovation and breakthroughs in the tech industry often require years of advance planning and persistent exploration. Therefore, the company has long been investing heavily in nurturing R&D talent and fostering technological innovation, allowing it to seize opportunities as new applications emerge.

For instance, in smart automotive technology, Quanta has expanded from early-stage navigation and infotainment systems to research and development in fully electric vehicles, autonomous driving computers, integrated infotainment systems, body control systems, motor, and battery management systems. The company has applied its expertise in high-speed signal development to new-generation autonomous central computers and regional control systems. Additionally, it has successfully developed energy conversion systems (Inverters) between batteries and motors, penetrating high-voltage and high-current applications.

In the realm of smart healthcare, Quanta integrates various technologies, including server-side, wireless network, and user terminal technologies, to develop innovative solutions such as AI medical cloud platforms, smart electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors, and Bluetooth temperature patches. In smart manufacturing, Quanta leverages big data, AI, wireless communication, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing to combine data and simulation models of physical products or systems. This approach helps in testing, validating, and optimizing processes, thereby enhancing production efficiency.

Notably, beyond these three major fields, Quanta is also making significant strides in AI smart glasses. The company is investing in the development and production of key optical and mechanical modules for near-eye displays, as well as the integration and manufacturing of technologies required for head-mounted displays. Their product line includes AR, VR displays, and smart glasses.

Quanta points out that with the rise of AI, led by ChatGPT, AI smart glasses are seen as the ideal device. They can facilitate direct communication with AI through voice and near-eye displays. As various tech products mature, this will lead to more diversified new applications, fostering new demands and markets.
