Acer Health Intelligence announced that its eye AI medical equipment software, VeriSee AMD, designed for screening age-related macular degeneration (AMD), has obtained medical device approval from the Medical Device Authority (MDA) under the Ministry of Health Malaysia. This success marks another strategic move for Acer Health Intelligence into the Southeast Asian market.
According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), with population growth and aging demographics, more individuals face the risk of vision impairment. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly, especially prevalent in developed countries. Symptoms of AMD include blurry or distorted vision, and the appearance of central shadows in the visual field. Delayed diagnosis due to low awareness of early symptoms often leads to irreversible vision loss.
Data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM) shows that the proportion of the population aged 65 and above increased from 7.2% in 2022 to 7.4% in 2023, reaching 2.5 million people, indicating a gradual aging trend in Malaysia. Acer Health Intelligence's VeriSee AMD, utilizing deep learning technology and drawing on the experience of multiple ophthalmologists in diagnosing AMD, assists healthcare professionals in the preliminary screening of individuals over 50 years old at high risk of age-related macular degeneration.
The certification of VeriSee AMD in Malaysia signifies Acer Health Intelligence's official entry into the Malaysian market with its AI-assisted screening software, collaborating with local medical institutions to provide opportunities for patients to detect and treat AMD at an early stage.
Situated at the center of Southeast Asia, Malaysia's MDA certification holds significant importance for Acer Health Intelligence's expansion into the Southeast Asian market. In its fifth year since establishment, Acer Health Intelligence remains focused on leveraging artificial intelligence in the field of preventive medicine, striving to develop integrated solutions for smart medical devices, and contributing to the protection and improvement of patients' health.
