Taichung Veterans General Hospital collaborates with Acer Medical to develop the "VeriOsteo OP" (Chinese name: 智骨篩), a smart medical software. On the 16th, they held a press conference announcing its launch. Utilizing just one chest X-ray image, it can rapidly screen individuals for symptoms of osteoporosis within 30 seconds, allowing for the early detection and treatment of suspected cases.
Taichung Veterans General Hospital points out that osteoporosis is rapidly increasing due to the aging population trend, with risks including fractures in various parts of the body, especially spinal and hip fractures, which are most severe. Research shows that Taiwan ranks first in the Asia-Pacific region for hip fracture incidence.
Taichung Veterans General Hospital states that the Orthopedics Department has applied the "VeriOsteo OP" software internally to reduce the risk of fractures among the elderly. By using chest X-ray images to screen for bone density abnormalities, it achieves an accuracy rate of nearly 90%, effectively predicting patients with abnormal bone density and providing them with appropriate educational information and appointments for osteoporosis prevention and treatment consultations.
Taichung Veterans General Hospital further mentions that the software has been approved by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) and is Taiwan's first smart medical device for assisting in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. It will be promoted to major medical institutions, health examination centers, and grassroots clinics in the future, providing more convenient bone density screening services.
Dr. Shih-ann Chen the director of Taichung Veterans General Hospital, stated, "As Taiwan enters an ultra-aging society, osteoporosis has become an issue that cannot be ignored. Our hospital is actively promoting digital transformation, developing smart medical devices through artificial intelligence and deep learning technology to improve the diagnostic process and provide more accurate diagnosis and medical services."
The "VeriOsteo OP" software, a collaboration between Taichung Veterans General Hospital and Acer Medical, combines innovative technology with the rich clinical experience of Vice President Cheng-hung Lee and Director Kun-hui Chen of the Orthopedics Department. Both parties are optimistic about its success and believe that it will make breakthroughs and contributions to Taiwan's smart healthcare industry.
