Following the sudden death of Michael Chang, the founder and chairman of OBI Pharma, the company's board of directors has elected Yun Yen, former President of Taipei Medical University and current Chairman of Tanvex BioPharma, as the new Chairman, and to take over the role of Chief Executive Officer temporarily.
Dr. Yen completed his doctorate in pathology and cell biology in the United States and was trained in oncology, blood and bone marrow transplantation at Yale University before being recruited by Taipei Medical University to serve as its president.
In June 2021, Tanvex BioPharma signed a CDMO contract with OBI Pharma for the development and manufacturing of a new drug of OBI's. According to OBI, Dr. Yen and the company have a common understanding on the development of new cancer drugs and hope to use each other's network and expertise to promote the early commercialisation of OBI and Tanvex drugs. Therefore, the industry is not surprised to see Dr. Yen taking over as Chairman.
However, Dr. Yen is acting as CEO for a temporary period of six months. With new developments and licensings expected from 2023 onwards, both the majority shareholder, Ruentex Group, and OBI are hoping to bring in more talent to accelerate the development of new drugs. As a result of Michael Chang's passing, OBI's share price was hit on the 30th, falling 3.76% to close at NT$69.1, with foreign investors oversold 401 shares in a single day.
