Acer Medical announced that its "VeriSee DR" ophthalmic AI-assisted diagnostic software can help diagnose the risk of retinopathy in diabetics, and has been successfully introduced to over 100 medical institutions across Taiwan.
According to the National Health Service, there are more than 2 million diabetic patients in Taiwan, and the number of new patients is increasing at a rate of 25,000 per year. Diabetic patients with poor blood sugar control are prone to small vessel disease, with diabetic retinopathy (DR) being the most common cause of adult blindness.
According to statistics, diabetics are 10 to 20 times more likely to go blind than the general population. The "2022 Clinical Care Guidelines for Type 2 Diabetes" published by the Diabetes Association of the Republic of China recommends that diabetics should have their eyes tracked regularly and should receive a fundus examination of their vision and dilated pupils at least once a year. However, "fundus examination or fundus colour photography" is the most neglected indicator of diabetes clinical care, with a national average screening rate of 44.69% in 2021, indicating that more than half of diabetic patients are not regularly followed up.
In 2021, the number of diabetic caregivers at Taipei UMC exceeded 37,000, the highest number of diabetic patients admitted to any regional hospital in Taiwan, and the glycophthalmia screening rate reached 54.61%, higher than the national average. To further improve the quality of care for diabetic patients and the efficiency of sugar-eye screening, UMC has recently introduced the VeriSeeDR AI-assisted diagnosis solution for diabetic retinopathy at its six hospitals, including Zhongxing, Heping, Renai, Zhongxiao, Yangming and Linsen Diabetes Health Education Centres.
The VeriSeeDR AI solution is integrated with the hospital's PACS imaging system and HIS reporting system to assist the hospital's new generation of physicians in interpreting fundus images, which not only improves the efficiency of glycophthalmia screening in a single hospital, but also aligns the quality of diabetes care in each hospital.
Chen Chun-sen, Director of the Department of Metabolism at UMC's Zhongxiao Campus, said that the large-scale implementation of VeriSee DR at UMC's six campuses will enable doctors to check the diagnostic recommendations of the AI software immediately after patients complete fundus examinations, speeding up the efficiency of glucose eye screening.
VeriSee DR is the first ophthalmology smart material approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and has been introduced to more than 100 medical institutions in Taiwan and overseas, and more than five of them have become medical centres.
