Overview
The sports medicine center focuses on innovative regeneration research and treatment. Not only minimal invasive surgery, we also devoted on  nonsurgical modalities such as tissue regeneration techniques. The extracorporeal shockwave therapy has been well developed in sports medicine of Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. From the basic working mechanism to various clinical application, more than 100 academic medical research has been published. The application of this tissue regeneration technique has been extended to chronic wound healing, coronary artery disease and urologic impotence etc.
Features
Extracorporeal ShockWaves Thrapy (ESWT) are high energy acoustic waves generated under water by high voltage electrode. Using an elliptical reflector, high energy the acoustic waves are collected into a focus point with higher energy level that produces therapeutic effects in human tissues in clinical application. In earlier days, orthopedic ESWT is predominantly used in sports related overuse tendinopathies including plantar fasciitis, patellar tendinitis, lateral epicondylitis and calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder. ESWT is also used to treat chronic long bone non-unions. The results of many clinical control trials showed that ESWT is consistently more effective than the conventional treatments in various tendiopathies and non-unions. The complications are rare and minor, and the recurrent rate is low.

We demonstrated that ESWT stimulates the release of angiogenic growth factors which improve blood perfusion and tissue repair. The proposed working mechanism has expanded the use of ESWT to include other diseases such as avascular necrosis of the femoral head, diabetic foot ulcers, ischemic heart disease and osteoarthritis of the knee etc. The preliminary results showed superior results with ESWT as compared to the conventional methods of treatment in many disorders.
