Taiwan's diverse and innovative R&D efforts, along with the operational and R&D strengths of its companies, and the government's commitment to biotechnology development make this the right time to strengthen its international connection. Thus, we present this volume to provide an overview of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry in Taiwan and its international growth opportunities and advantages.

Connecting and Partnering with Taiwan
In recent years, Taiwan's economy has shifted to focus on knowledge-based innovation. Although Taiwan's biotechnology and pharmaceutical R&D has recently been focused on the development of new drugs and high-end medical devices, there is still considerable room for improvement. In the past years, Taiwan has invested considerable resources in the improvement of research and development. As a result, Taiwan's presence in all aspects of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals development has been better recognized, while the government continues to improve the infrastructure and related bylaws as well as funding for the development of biotechnology industry and enhancement of international cooperation. This volume of “BioTaiwan Highlights” is designed to showcase Taiwan's leading benchmark enterprises with regard to their R&D capacity and operations, in the hopes of raising the international profile and the development potential of Taiwan's biotechnology industry.

On behalf of the advisory committee for this volume, I would like to thank all advisory members and colleagues of the Institute for Biotechnology and Medicine Industry for their efforts to make the publication of this volume possible. As this industry continues to thrive, systematic evaluation and identification of benchmark companies is necessary. Such efforts will not only help highlight the strengths and niches of local enterprises, but also improve the transparency and the international competitiveness of Taiwan's biotech industry.

During the process of selecting companies for inclusion in this volume, it was found that many companies have significantly increased investment in innovation and R&D with more interactions at the international levels. We welcome international partners to collaborate with Taiwan and to jointly develop innovative biotechnology products for the benefit of mankind.
